Gas is made to be out in the big world, not in babies tummies!

Gas can be one of the big triggers to upset newborns and upset new parents.

Gas is made to be out in the big world, not in babies tummies!

Here are some easy tips to manage gassy babies:

  1. Stop and burp during feeds (not just at the end of the feed) bottle feeding every ounce/ breastfeeding every 10 minutes.
  2. Keeping baby upright for at least 15 minutes after feeds in the daytime it will pay off later on.
  3. Try burping BEFORE you start feeding I call it “cleaning out the pipes”.
  4. A good baby carrier and having baby upright going for a walk in the later afternoon (when gas starts to build up). The will help the tummy into the evening.
  5. Have a Mother Me doula coming for a 5 hours visit just specifically to come up with some “gas management “skills to help everyone.

I had a thought.. and perhaps a question .. ! Is there any indication as to whether or not breast feeding or bottle fed babies differ in the amount of gas..( is this a silly question). Also what about the mothers stress level when feeding the baby.. if the new Mum is more relaxed.. does that have any bearing on the amount of gas? What about the type of bottle that you would use .. is one better than another?
