Video: Preparing to Breastfeed

Mother Me Tip #1: A step by step instructional video to give breastfeeding moms tips on what a good breastfeeding position looks like and what they should have on hand.

Here is the complete list of what we talked about in this video for you to print off or pass on to a friend. Things you need to breastfeed comfortably:

  1. Go to the washroom beforehand
  2. Use a breastfeeding stool or ergonomic foot rest
  3. Firm breastfeeding pillow - we used www.youpillows.com
  4. Side table: water bottle/drink, fresh fruit, granola bars/protein bars, nuts (raw almonds, pecans, walnuts)
  5. Telephone with a hands free attachment
  6. Receiving blanket, baby face cloth & bib

We would love to hear from you! What are some things you have found handy to have with you while nursing? Enter your comments below.

It is such a shame a lot of women don’t even try to breastfeed when it is the best start for a baby and so convenient. The Supernanny website has some good info on it…

Thank you for writing a supportive post on starting to BF. I believe that it all comes down to support.
The first few weeks I was pretty ravenous during nursing sessions. So, I agree with the food nearby and remember calling to my husband to make me toast at 3 AM on more then one occasion during the early weeks.

I like # 6. I had a lot of milk and it flowed like crazy. All over everything! So, for me, I used a lot of baby burp cloths during nursing. Sometimes covering up the other breast that might sprout a spray at any second and cover the couch or baby or my pajamas. I never used a breastfeeding pillow or a foot stool. I found my best position was feet up and crossed legged on the couch with a regular pillow on my lap. That worked well for me!

This looks like a great site for supporting mothers and their infants. I have never blogged before so this is all very new.  My daughter suggested that I try.

I am an RN for many years.  I work at the BC nurseline now called HealthlinkservicesBC.  We provide health information and triage for all BC residents .  As a telenurse I frequently assist parents with the health concerns of their families.

I have had a special interest in breast feeding for some time.  I recently wrote a major paper on its benefits and the things that help and hinder breast feeding.  I am presently taking a course in breast feeding and as a project for that course I would like to facilitate the experience of breast feeding for the nurses at the nurseline.

I am looking for moms and infants to attend a get together in the comfortable nurseline lounge with their breast feeding infants—to share their stories with each other and with some of the nurses who are interested and to breast feed.  I am looking for about 4 moms and babies to visit with us on November 18th in Burnaby.  Research has shown that health care providers will provide care and guidance with greater self confidence when they experience breast feeding realities and joys first hand.

I will make sandwiches !
Please email me if you are interested.
