Why We Like White Noise

Mother Me recommends the use of white noise to help soothe or encourage your baby to sleep longer

Why We Like White Noise

Dr. Harvey Karp, creator of Happiest Baby on the Block, has a theory that babies, especially in their first few months of life, experience “fourth trimester” issues . Life outside of mom’s body, away from the constant loud shushing sound heard inside the womb,  presents a huge amount of erratic stimuli which many babies may have difficulty  getting used to. The result is: a crying baby.  One remedy is white noise.

White noise is a sound frequency, a subtle, soothing steady sound, almost monotonous as found in the sound of nature’s waterfalls, ocean waves and rain which can trigger baby’s calming reflex. This steady stream of the same peaceful sound can also filter and mask those everyday household sounds that can startle babies awake, like dishes clanking, siblings shouting & dogs barking.

For newborns who are not used to complete silence or are startled easily by day to day abrupt noises, Mother Me has created a white noise CD, West Coast Liquid Lullabies, of something all Vancouverites are familiar with- the sound of falling rain.

All Mother Me clients will receive a free CD with their first day/night shift bookings. Mother Me clients have taken their CD along with familiar bedding when they travel to help  keep the sleep environment consistent.

If you have any other questions about newborns and sleep patterns. please email us; we would love to try to help.
